Description/Significance
The project is made of earth, stabilized and reinforced by up to 26 layers of 1 1/2 foot tall welded-wire baskets and a million square feet of grid material. The berm, which is half a mile long, required 180,000 yards of fill. The top of the berm extends for 1,600 feet at a level height 25 to 39 feet above the ground below.
The project also included 1,300 feet of 16” gas lines to collect methane from the landfill, 4,500 feet of dual containment leachate collection pipes, 2,000 feet of 18” to 42” storm drains, and a 2,400 foot long utility road at the foot of the berm.
Work included stripping existing topsoil, removing existing leachate system and pumping/managing leachate, installing new leachate force mains, installing new storm water system with HDPE pipe and manholes, relocation of three existing leachate vaults and berm construction done in four stage levels.
