Description/Significance
Construction of Phase IIA of the Area 3 Landfill at Fairfax County, Virginia’s I-95 Sanitary Landfill. The project consists of a new double composite lined landfill of 12.5 acres at the County’s currently operating facility in Lorton, Virginia. The work consisted of 495,000 cubic yards of excavation, placing 40,000 cubic yards of 1 x 10-7 soil barrier material, installing a 60 mil synthetic liner system separated by a fine aggregate drainage layer, a double geocomposite drainage net and leachate collection layer with associated piping, including a tire chip drainage layer. Also the work included a concrete encased storm drainage culvert and a paved storage area for the owner. The work was scheduled as a fast track project to be completed in 180 calendar days.
